Use long-tail keyword phrases in your title.

First, you need to do search engine keyword research, which is a lot easier than you’re probably thinking. Here’s a Keyword Research Tutorial to get you started.
If you’ve ever wondered what your target readers are interested in, you can get a behind the scenes look at what they’re typing into Google by doing some simple keyword research.
The long-tail keyword phrases are the longer,  less popular and therefore less competitive phrases. The fact that they’re less competitive means that with a little effort you can dominate the search engines for these phrases. By consistently writing articles targeting long-tail keyword phrases, you could eventually create blanket coverage for niche.
Long-tail keyword phrases are usually super specific and can be easily adapted to be an article title. Think about the long-tail keyword phrase “how much does it cost to rewire a house”. This would be a perfect one for an electrician, as the phrase is a title in itself–all it needs is for someone to write an article to answer that question.
Compare that to the keyword phrase  ”commercial electrician”, and not only do you have stiffer competition with the shorter, more general phrase, but you also don’t have as much direction for subject matter for the article.

Writing Headlines:

– Write your article title first.

I know a lot of folks who write the article and then come up with a title as the last course of business. If that is what you normally do, I encourage you to reverse your process.
Why? When you sit down to write your article, you have an idea of what you’ll be writing about. By creating the title first, you’ll also be explicitly stating the promise that your article will fulfill. This will help you to write a more focused article–if you know what the main point you’re going for in the article, it will direct all of the things you choose to include in the content.
This is a lot easier than writing the article first and then trying to backtrack and extract a purpose or promise from the already written article to highlight in the title.

Article Writing Tips: How To Write An Article That Solves A Small Problem (And Makes A Big Difference!)

Your first order of business when writing an article is to select a topic. All of the articles that you write will be related to the topic of your website. For example, if you’re an accountant, then the general topic of your website is “accounting” and all of your articles will be about some aspect of accounting. If your website is a collection of chocolate recipes, then all of your articles will be about chocolate in some way. You get the idea…

But how can you figure out a specific topic to cover in your article?

There are tons of things you could write about, so how do you choose?
A great article marketing strategy is to use your article to teach your reader how to do something very simple related to your niche. Another idea is to write an article that solves a very small problem.
Both of these ideas are along the same vein–they result in a really focused article that provides specific and detailed information on one simple thing. This is usually the type of information that readers are looking for anyway.
Not sure about covering a very small topic in your article? Here are some benefits:
  • You’ll be providing much needed information, and you probably won’t have much competition. Many other writers in your niche will overlook articles that solve really small, elementary problems, which actually works out great for you.
  • A small problem usually has a relatively easy solution. If the reader feels like your article has created a “simple fix” for something in his life, then you leave him with a positive impression of you and your business, and he is much more likely to turn to you when he needs something in the future.
  • You make the reader feel smart. Your article is simple and to the point. The information that you provide addresses a practical need. The reader spends a few minutes digesting the contents of your article and comes away thinking, “I can do that!”. We like people who make us feel smart.

Step 1: Here are some questions to help you generate some ideas:

1 – If you could have a 10 minute conversation with a reader interested in your niche, what crucial advice would you give him or her?
2 – What one common mistake do you see people in your niche making on a regular basis?
3 – What is one simple thing that your readers need to know how to do in order to have success in your niche?
Think about your answers to these questions and write down some ideas for either simple things you could teach your readers how to do or some simple problems that you could solve through your articles.

Step 2: Develop A Laser Beam Focus.

The reason why articles that solve small problems (or teach simple things) are so effective is that the narrow focus of the article allows you to provide very detailed information.
You may think that the problem is so small that the answer is elementary. You may feel foolish breaking your answer down into such obvious chunks of information.
If that’s what you think, remember how you feel when you’re looking for information online. Most of the time there is some very simple thing that you’re clueless about, and you’re looking for quick information. Most of your readers are in the same situation, and it just so happens that the topic that they’re clueless about falls under your niche.

Step 3: Break The Article Into Obvious Steps (and number them).

Your readers will likely be skimming your article (that’s how most online readers gather information), so it’s crucial to your article’s success that you format it in an easy-to-read way. By breaking your article into steps and then clearly numbering them, you’re giving the reader obvious visual clues that guide him or her through the article.

4 – Answer the question “Why?”.

Tell the reader why the small issue you’re covering in your article is important and clearly explain the benefits of making the small changes that you’re recommending. Sometimes when an issue is tiny or taken for granted, people really don’t realize how making such a small change can have any impact in their experience in your niche.
In a lot of niches though, it’s the small things that make the biggest impact. When I think back on my education, one thing that made a huge difference in my life was learning how to type quickly. That seems like such a simple thing that people who are ambitious and hungry for knowledge wouldn’t trouble themselves with, but that tiny thing makes every day of my life so much easier.
If you’re a baseball fan, think about all the tiny things that go into hitting a baseball. Professional teams hire batting coaches who analyze the tiniest mechanics of a player’s swing to help him hit better. It’s the same with golf–you think it looks so simple, but there is a huge difference in the swing of an amateur and a professional. Tiny things make a big difference.

Your Homework:

For your next article, write an article that solves a small problem or teaches the reader how to do something really simple What small problem will you cover? What simple thing will you teach?

17 Common Article Marketing Mistakes (And How To Avoid Them)

Because we are all human, it’s inevitable that every person who does article marketing will screw up every once in a while. In coming up with this list of common article marketing mistakes, for a good many of them I simply thought back on my own innocent blunders as I was getting started. Because I read so many articles each day, I also get a daily reminder of the kinds of things that trip up a lot of people.
When I see people making these mistakes, I empathize. I’ve been there too!
There are two major perks to making mistakes–if you learn from them you get better at what you do, and you can also pass on your hard won knowledge to others so that they don’t have to walk the crooked path that you stumbled down. That is what I’m hoping to do with this next series of posts– I want you to learn from my mistakes and from the mistakes of many before you.
And if you happen to see any blunders that you’re currently doing in this list, I don’t want you to feel too bad. I remember the first (and last!) time that I submitted an article with a broken link in the resource box. My heart fell, and I kicked myself for a few minutes thinking “I can’t believe I did that!”.
That was many articles ago, and I’ve since recovered from my silly mistake, but I wanted to assure you that making the occasional innocent “oops” is not going to derail your article marketing campaign–unless you take it so badly that you give up.
Today I’ll give you an overview of the 17 common article marketing mistakes we’re covering in this series. In future weeks we’ll devote a post to each mistake and thoroughly cover how to avoid it. Let’s begin:
Mistake #1 – Not doing keyword research.
Mistake #2 – Not putting enough thought into your resource box.
Mistake #3 – Not submitting articles consistently.
Mistake #4 – Submitting too many articles.
Mistake #5 – Expecting immediate results.
Mistake #6 – Writing off-topic articles.
Mistake #7 – Submitting to only a few article directories.
Mistake #8 – Running out of article topics.
Mistake #9 – Creating throw-away titles.
Mistake #10 – Writing over people’s heads.
Mistake #11 – Not formatting your article in a reader-friendly way.
Mistake #12 – Writing promotional (sales oriented) articles.
Mistake #13 – Trying to submit the same content more than once.
Mistake #14 – Submitting a resource box with broken links.
Mistake #15 – Inappropriate use of keywords in your title, article body, and/or resource box.
Mistake #16 – Writing articles that are too long or not long enough.
Mistake #17 – Forgetting to proofread your article.
In the coming weeks we’ll cover each mistake one by one along with tips on how to avoid it.
That’s our list of common mistakes–do any look familiar to you? Are there any others that you’ve run into that are missing from the list? Please share!

ASKED

about how the publisher benefits when he uses free reprint articles on his blog.
You benefit by getting niche specific content that is helpful to your readers. Also, when Google is trying to determine the importance of your website, one factor that it considers is how long a reader stays on your site after being referred from the search engine.
The more quality content that you have on your site, the longer that readers will tend to stay and look around, and that can impact your search engine rankings for the better.
If you were able to and wanted to write all of the content on your blog, that would be great, but many blog publishers simply do not have the time or inclination to produce content on a consistent basis, so they turn to free reprint articles. While the articles are free (you do not have to pay money for them), the writer needs to get something in return for providing the content.
The reason why people create free reprint articles is to market their websites. With a traditional free reprint article, there would be a resource box (aka ‘author bio’) that appears beneath the article and includes biographical information as well as an incentive to visit their website and a link or two to the site.
For blog publishers, we offer an alternative to the traditional resource box. We call it “Naked Articles”, meaning that the published article is without a resource box or other author attribution (hence, ‘naked’) and with a link or two within the body of the post. For all intents and purposes, they appear to anyone reading the blog as a post you have written yourself.
You had said you didn’t want to publish advertisements of other people’s products on your blog–perhaps you meant that you didn’t want to publish articles with resource boxes? If that’s the case, you can opt to receive Naked Articles.
I also wanted to make clear that the articles that we distribute are not advertisements or sales oriented–they are educational articles written on the area of expertise of the author. For example, when I submit articles, I write articles that teach people how to do article marketing, rather than articles about my business, SubmitYourArticle.com
So, the content that you would receive would not be advertisements, but helpful content that your readers would appreciate. There would be one to two links in the article body (if you chose to receive Naked Articles), but they are not of the “click here” variety and do not include language that promotes the website of the author or that tries to lure the reader to click the link. The links are anchor text links, and the text that is linked is in context with the rest of the non-sales oriented article.
You had asked another question: “Would it not be a better idea for everyone that signs up, to link blogs so that when someone makes a post it goes to all the other members blogs?”
I’m sorry, I do not know where you could find free quality content that did not involve crediting the author by linking to another site.
I hope this helps!

keywords

You don’t have to choose keywords–you would only do that if you had very specific content that you were interested in.
If you don’t specify the keywords, then you will receive all the articles submitted under the categories that you select.
If you do specify keywords that you require, then you will only be sent articles that contain one of your keyword phrases.
You’ll receive more articles if you don’t specify keywords, but you’ll receive more specific articles if you do specify keywords.
If you only want to receive Naked Articles, there’s a box that you can check so that you’re only sent Naked Articles.
Hope that helps–let me know if you have any other questions…

free blog posting system

Free Blog Posting System – How To Get A Steady Stream Of High-Quality Content Auto-Posted To Your Blog …

It’s official – our new free blog posting system is now open for business!
This post explains exactly how you can register your blog(s) with us to receive a constant stream of high-quality, niche-focused content.
However, to avoid overloading our systems, there are practical limits on the number of blogs that we can accept – once that limit has been reached, the facility to register new blogs with us will likely be withdrawn.
This new system is likely to be very popular and it’s therefore important that you act quickly to ensure your own blog(s) are in the system.
What this means for your blog, or any number of blogs that you control, is that you can receive a constant stream of high quality, niche-focused, human-reviewed content in the form of:

  • Free reprint articles – with a resource box at the end, containing some author information and a link or two to the author’s site; and/or
  • ‘Naked articles’ –  essentially these are free reprint articles that show as a normal post on your blog, without a resource box or other author attribution (hence, ‘naked’) and with a link or two within the body of the post. For all intents and purposes, they appear to anyone reading the blog as a post you have written yourself. (Will be available mid-November 2010)
The link(s) within the content represent the ‘value’ for the author of the content, i.e. this is how they stand to benefit by providing your blog with the content for free.
The good news is that these links benefit your blog too, simply because search engines like Google tend to give higher ranking to sites that link to other relevant resources … and because the content you receive will be relevant to your niche (which you set by specifying keywords, explained further below), the sites linked to from within the content are going to be other relevant websites.
Either type of content can come with varying levels of uniqueness (i.e. how different the content will be to other sites that the article is sent to) – you can determine the level of uniqueness you require for your blog, as further illustrated below.
To take advantage, all you need to do is to use SubmitYOURArticle.com’s Publisher Dashboard facility to register any number of blogs that you control, and start receiving high quality content based on your requirements direct to your blogs.
For each individual blog, you can:
  • Filter content specific for your niche by:
    • Setting categories you would like to receive content in
    • Setting the exact keywords you are looking for
    • Setting keywords you are looking to exclude
  • Set the minimum level of ‘uniqueness’ for the content you receive (effective from mid-November 2010)
  • Receive ‘naked articles’ only – these look like real blog posts, and do not look like free reprint articles (effective from mid-November 2010)
  • Decide whether you want content delivered to your blog to be published straight away, or left for you to manually approve
  • Decide if you want to be notified by email when content is sent to your blog
  • Pause and resume submissions to your blog at any time
  • And more!
Any of the above settings can be adjusted at any time.

Follow these instructions to set up your first blog:

1. Log In To The Publisher’s Dashboard

Log into the Publisher Dashboard (sign up here if you’re not already registered)

2. Select to Add a Blog

Select to add a blog from the drop-down – this will take you to the Add Blog page.

3. Turn XML-RPC ON For Your Blog

Log into your blog’s wp-admin facility (eg. http://www.yourblog.com/wp-admin) and click Settings > Writing.
Under ‘Remote Publishing’, check the XML-RPC checkbox:

4. Enter The Settings For Your Blog

Use the help information for each field to assist you in understanding what to enter.

It’s recommended that initially you leave the ‘Auto-approve articles’ option unchecked – as you get confident in the content you receive and have fine tuned it sufficiently, you can then check this box so that content is automatically published and requires very little day to day involvement form yourself.
It’s also recommended that you check the ‘Notify on Post’ option, at least initially, so that you’re able to quickly review content as it’s posted to your blog.
Regardless of whether this option is checked, the email address you provide with each blog is used to notify you in case there is an issue in posting to the blog, for example if we’re having technical difficulties reaching your blog.

5. Configure Your Blog To Receive Niche-Relevant Content

Broadly speaking, it will help at first if you keep the options as open as possible to start with so that you receive as much content as possible that’s relevant to your blog, and once you get a feel for the content you are receiving, fine tune it from that point.
For example, the higher the ‘Uniqueness’ setting, the less content you are likely to receive, simply because the articles we deliver will have varying levels of uniqueness, from none at all to relatively high levels.
It’s recommended at first to select all the categories in the ‘Categories required’ box, and use the ‘Keywords required’ field to fine tune the content you receive for your blog.
To do this, the following process is recommended:
a. Go to Google’s Keyword Tool
b. Enter your blog’s niche into the search box – for example, if your blog focuses on starting a blog, enter ‘start a blog’ into the search box:
Don’t worry too much about the exact phrase used – just enter one or two phrases that broadly describe your niche.
c. Click the Search button
d. Google then brings back 100 associated keywords – you’re now going to download all of these and enter these keywords into the Keywords Required field. Click Download > Download All – as shown:
e. Download as ‘CSV for Excel’ and open into Excel or an alternative spreadsheet application – if you don’t have Excel, you can for example import the CSV file into Google Docs (http://docs.google.com)
f. Once open as a spreadsheet, delete the top row (containing the column headers, like ‘Keyword’, etc.), and then select the first column and copy, for example:

g. Paste into the Keywords required field:

That’s really all you have to do – as you start to receive content, you may wish to refine this list of keywords required, and use the keywords excluded list if you start getting content you know you don’t want on your blog.
Please note that the keywords listed in either the keywords required or excluded fields are matched against any content we store for the article in question, so the title, article body, resource box(es), short description and the keywords that the author entered against the article.

6. Save Your Blog

Tick the box at the bottom to indicate your agreement, and click Submit.

7. Verify Your Email If Necessary

It may be necessary to verify your email address before your blog is activated in our network – if so, you will see an appropriate message on the screen and will need to check your mailbox according to the instructions provided.
As soon as your email is verified, your blog will become Active.

8. Wait to Receive Content, and Fine Tune …

Note that content to your blog may start off slowly and then begin to accelerate after a few days or more – this is because articles already in distribution will not be scheduled to submit to your blog, only articles that are approved after your blog has been entered into the system will be scheduled to submit to your blog.
Any changes you make to your content requirements are activated as soon as they are entered into the system, so become effective immediately.
Once you start to receive content, you can start to fine tune the content you receive so that it’s exactly on target. To do this, just click to Edit Node Settings via the Publisher Dashboard home page.
Note that the more restrictive you make your requirements, the less content you are likely to receive, but you’ll begin to get a feel for the balance that is right for your blog.

9. Enter More Blogs

You can enter as many blogs as you like into the system in the same way, using your same Publisher Dashboard account.
So you can for example create new blogs on new domains, and then set them up in the Publisher Dashboard to start receiving niche-relevant quality content on auto-pilot. You can start to monetize them with advertising, through building up email lists, selling products relevant to the niche, and so on.
You can also use the content we supply to supplement content you already produce for existing blogs – for example, an additional few articles a month might be just what you need to start generating some momentum for your blog.

10. Spread The Word!

Auto blog posting systemOther blog owners are going to love you for telling them about this exciting service – help spread the word by mailing your list or telling others you know who might be interested!
If you’re a member of SubmitYOURArticle.com, you’ll also benefit from this by helping to get as many blogs as possible to join our network.
All you need to do is send them to our new sister site, http://www.autoblogit.com – here’s a sample email you can send, although please adapt it to your own ‘voice’ and just use it as the basis of your own message:
Subject: Quality, unique content for your blog (on auto-pilot)
Subject: Exciting service feeds blogs with QUALITY, unique content
Subject: Feed your blog with QUALITY, unique content … automatically
Hi {FIRSTNAME}
I’ve just plugged into this service myself, and couldn’t wait to tell you about it … basically it feeds your blog(s) with quality, human-reviewed, unique content on auto-pilot.
Best of all, it’s currently 100% fre-e.
I’ve set up one of my own blogs with it, just took a few minutes, was very straightforward, and now I can sit back and look forward to a stream of quality content automatically populating my blog.
I’ve seen other services where you can basically fill your blog with snippets of content from here and there, but it never feels like ‘real’ blog content (eg. real blog posts), the quality is often dire … and it comes across as very ‘spammy’.
Frankly this is NOTHING like that at all.
Go here to find out more:

No, this isn’t an affiliate link, I won’t make me a cent telling you about this – but I can guarantee YOU are going to find this very valuable.

Common Article Marketing Mistakes: Mistake #1 Not Doing Keyword Research (It’s An Easy Fix!)

Recently I was telling you ,  very first one we listed was the mistake of not doing any keyword research before starting to submit articles.
I know that just hearing the words “keyword research” sounds incredibly boring and cerebral to some, but I assure you that it’s really not as hard as it sounds. Really, anyone can do basic keyword research by just using Google’s free keyword research tool.
For those who are totally new to article marketing, let’s start at the beginning:

What are keywords?

You’ve probably searched for things a million times on Google. When you “google” things, you type a phrase into Google’s search box and then Google presents you with a list of web pages that (hopefully) have the information that you’re looking for.
From your perspective as the search customer, you’re typing “search terms” into Google’s search box.
But from a website owner’s perspective, those words that you typed into Google’s search box are “keywords”, “keyword terms” or “keyword phrases”–all of those mean the same thing.
Keywords are words on a web page that have special significance about the topic of the web page.

What happens when you do keyword research?

When you do keyword research, you are simply trying to find out what phrases people in your target market are searching for and how many other web pages are competing to meet that demand. If you discover that there are 10,000 searches for a particular keyword phrase, then you have an idea of the traffic potential. If you also discover that there are currently 50,000 web pages competing for those 10,000 searches, you know that for that particular phrase, you’ve got your work cut out for you in the competition department.
Ideally, what you’re looking for are phrases that have a good traffic potential but that also don’t have that many web pages already meeting that demand. In a situation like that, you’ll have an easier time ranking highly for that keyword phrase, because you won’t have that much competition.  It won’t always work out like that though–if you’re in a very competitive field, you’ll just be aware that it may take longer to make headway in the rankings.

What is the big deal about keywords?

The higher your web pages rank in search engines results lists, the more traffic will be directed to your site. Getting a top ranking for keywords that are very important to your niche can make a dramatic difference in the number of visitors to your website and your eventual sales. High rankings can translate into big money.

How are keywords used in article marketing?

You can strategically use keywords in the title, the article body, the resource boxes, the short description (article summary), and in the keywords field, which will often result in the URL of the page where your article sits containing your keyword phrase.
As you can see, if you know about keywords, it can really chance the way that you do your article submissions.
If “designer dog collars” is one of your keyword phrases, your aim is to get the pages of your website to rank higher in Google when people search for that phrase. Your ultimate goal is to be #1 in the rankings.
When you write articles, one of your keyword phrases will be “designer dog collars”, and by creating article submissions that appropriately use that keyword phrase, you are helping Google to associate the web pages that you link to from your resource box with the keyword term “designer dog collars”.
Ideally, over time the web pages on your site will rise up the rankings, making it so that when someone searches for the phrase “designer dog collars”, your website is one of the top results in Google’s list.
